Take office as Mayor of Almaty

Almaty, Kazakhstan · 21 people · Technology Hub

The Almaty City Akimat and the Almaty International Financial Centre (AIFC) manage Kazakhstan's financial and cultural capital, operate the Almaty Metro and expanding BRT network, coordinate comprehensive seismic retrofitting programmes across a city sitting on a major fault line that produced a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in 1911, and maintain the Medeu high altitude speed skating rink and Shymbulak ski resort infrastructure in the Ile-Alatau national park above the city.

The record Almaty keeps on the Board of Mayors is still unwritten. Take office and write its opening chapter.

The city

Landmark: Medeu Ice Rink & Kok-Tobe Hill.

• The Almaty City Akimat operates one of the world's most ambitious urban seismic resilience programmes — following the 1911 Kebin earthquake that razed the original city, all major new infrastructure uses base isolation and seismic damper engineering, with the municipality maintaining a network of early warning seismographs and mandatory earthquake drill protocols across all public institutions in a city where the geological risk remains active.
• The Almaty International Financial Centre operates under English common law within Kazakhstan's legal system — a unique special economic zone where the municipality coordinates bilingual municipal services, international school zoning, and expatriate housing permissions to support over 500 financial and legal firms operating under AIFC's independent judicial jurisdiction within the city's boundaries.

How a term works

Take office and each day brings a live situation from the city's services: a decision to make and a result that is measured. A term is judged on approval, infrastructure, environment and innovation, within the city's budget, and every term adds to the record Almaty keeps on the Board of Mayors. Mayors message and confer with one another, form councils, trade with neighbouring cities and send aid where it is needed. Cities rise together.
