Take office as Mayor of Rotterdam

Rotterdam, Netherlands · 650,000 people · Coastal City

Building homes in old harbour areas, renewing Rotterdam Zuid and preparing the city for heavy rain.

The record Rotterdam keeps on the Board of Mayors is still unwritten. Take office and write its opening chapter.

The city

Landmark: Euromast & Erasmusbrug.

• The Port of Rotterdam is the largest seaport in Europe, and the city owns most of the shares of its port authority.
• The city centre was destroyed by bombing in May 1940 and rebuilt with modern architecture.
• The Erasmus Bridge across the Nieuwe Maas opened in 1996.

How a term works

Take office and each day brings a live situation from the city's services: a decision to make and a result that is measured. A term is judged on approval, infrastructure, environment and innovation, within the city's budget, and every term adds to the record Rotterdam keeps on the Board of Mayors. Mayors message and confer with one another, form councils, trade with neighbouring cities and send aid where it is needed. Cities rise together.
