Take office as Mayor of Vatican City

Vatican City, Vatican City · 800 people · Heritage City

The Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and the Vatican Gendarmerie Corps manage the world's smallest sovereign state, coordinating crowd management for 6 million annual pilgrims to St. Peter's Basilica, overseeing UNESCO-listed conservation of the Sistine Chapel frescoes, operating independent power and water utilities within a 0.44 km² area, and managing the Vatican Museums as the primary cultural and financial institution.

The record Vatican City keeps on the Board of Mayors is still unwritten. Take office and write its opening chapter.

The city

Landmark: St. Peter's Basilica & Sistine Chapel.

• The Pontifical Commission's conservation laboratory employs world leading restoration scientists who use microlaser cleaning, digital photogrammetry, and nano lime consolidants to preserve Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling — a permanent climate control challenge in rooms visited by 5 million people annually, where body heat and breath humidity from visitors require precision HVAC management to prevent fresco deterioration.
• The Vatican Gendarmerie Corps coordinates with Rome's civil authorities and the Papal Swiss Guard to manage crowd flows through the 160-metre St. Peter's Square colonnade, deploying real time ticketing systems, emergency evacuation protocols, and vehicular exclusion zones to safely manage peak pilgrimage days that draw over 100,000 visitors to the world's smallest internationally recognised sovereign state.

How a term works

Take office and each day brings a live situation from the city's services: a decision to make and a result that is measured. A term is judged on approval, infrastructure, environment and innovation, within the city's budget, and every term adds to the record Vatican City keeps on the Board of Mayors. Mayors message and confer with one another, form councils, trade with neighbouring cities and send aid where it is needed. Cities rise together.
